First operation of the new 'Cyprus FBI' conducted in Cyprus
A large-scale police operation against organized crime has taken place in Cyprus, which local sources are already calling the first operation of the new anti-mafia unit — the so-called 'Cyprus FBI'. During the raids, three people were detained, and assets worth over 420,000 euros were seized.
Although the new Organized Crime Combat Department has not yet been officially presented in its full composition, its activities are already at an advanced stage. According to informed sources, the operation served as a demonstration of the law enforcement agencies' new strategy: the emphasis is not only on arrests but also on identifying financial flows, seizing assets, and destroying the economic base of criminal groups.
It is reported that the new unit has already compiled a detailed map of organized crime on the island and recorded significant changes in the criminal environment over the past year. In particular, information regarding the penetration of structures related to the Greek mafia into Cyprus is confirmed. The investigation is focused on studying connections, money flows, and individuals associated with international criminal networks.
According to preliminary data, Christos Andreou may become the first head of the new department. The police have not yet given official confirmation of this information, but corresponding announcements are expected in the coming days.
Under the auspices of the new structure, it is planned to merge key units, including the anti-drug department, criminal investigation services, and departments for combating economic crimes.
The Ministry of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus has already expressed support for the police actions, emphasizing that the fight against organized crime remains one of the state's top priorities.
