Graves Damaged During Tree Pruning at Nicosia Suburb Cemetery
The environmental group "Defenders of the Environment – Civil Cooperation" has expressed deep concern and regret over the significant damage caused to the tombstones at the Constantine and Helen Cemetery on Larnaca Avenue in Aglandjia. The damage occurred after local authorities pruned the cemetery's trees.
The cemetery was visited by Giorgos Perdikis, the leader of the party, to assess the extent of the damage. According to environmental activists, an unknown individual pruned a eucalyptus tree, causing damage to several graves and memorials.
"This action, although possibly necessary, was carried out without proper respect for this sacred site," the statement said.
In their appeal, the environmentalists demanded "an immediate and thorough investigation by the relevant authorities, as well as steps to restore the area and protect the monuments from further damage."
"We urge the competent authorities to demonstrate the necessary sensitivity and ensure the dignity and respect that our deceased loved ones deserve," the statement concluded.
