The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has expressed concern over the situation regarding the citizenship rights of Turkish Cypriots born in mixed marriages in the Republic of Cyprus. This was stated in a report published on May 1, 2026.

According to the document, children from marriages between Turkish Cypriots and Turkish settlers face obstacles in obtaining citizenship, which, in the Committee's view, requires resolution on a non-discriminatory basis. The report contains a recommendation to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to ensure equal access to civil rights for this category of persons.

Turkish Cypriot leader Erhürman, commenting on the publication, emphasized that similar findings had previously been voiced in the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. According to him, despite individual steps and initiatives, the problem remains unresolved.

Erhürman stated that issues related to granting EU citizenship to children from mixed marriages continue to cause serious concern. He noted that such practices contradict the principles of human rights and require a systemic review.

The politician also stressed that efforts to remove existing restrictions will continue at all international platforms. The focus remains on the need to respect human rights and prevent discrimination based on origin.

The situation surrounding citizenship once again raises the broader question of the rights and status of various population groups on the island, remaining one of the sensitive topics in the context of the Cyprus settlement.
