Fire hazard in Cyprus intensifies due to strong winds
The Cyprus Fire Service has warned of a significant increase in the risk of fires starting and spreading due to strengthening winds across the island.
Press spokesperson Andreas Kettis reported that winds of up to force 6 on the Beaufort scale, with gusts reaching force 8, have been recorded in several areas. According to him, such weather conditions significantly increase the likelihood of rapid fire spread.
During the day, several fires have already been registered in rural areas — both in coastal territories and in the Nicosia district. Authorities suggest that some of the fires may have been caused by agricultural work and the use of equipment that creates sparks.
Kettis urged citizens to refrain from any activity that could lead to a fire, especially in conditions of strong winds and dry vegetation.
He also stated that information regarding the possible causes of the fires has been passed to the police, who have launched an official investigation into the incidents.
Due to the increased danger, the Ministry of Interior has activated a relevant decree imposing a total ban on any outdoor hot work.
Authorities emphasize that compliance with precautionary measures is critical for preventing large-scale fires and protecting the population and the environment.
