Larnaca intensifies fight against mosquitoes due to increase in breeding sites

The Municipality of Larnaca has announced an intensification of anti-mosquito measures following a sharp increase in the number of breeding sites in several areas of the city. Residents have been complaining about the worsening situation, particularly near the salt lakes, Oroklini Lake, and other locations with stagnant water.

According to municipal authorities, health services will increase the frequency of treatments and spraying throughout the city. The main objective of the campaign is to reduce the insect population, protect public health, and minimize inconvenience for residents and tourists ahead of the summer season.

Special focus will be given to areas near Larnaca Airport, which are affected by the salt lakes. Intensified measures will also cover the Oroklini area, the grounds of the former oil refineries, and Livadia, where there are spots with stagnant water.

The municipality stated that the treatments are being carried out by Larnaca health service personnel in cooperation with specialized crews. Concurrently, the Ministry of Health is continuing its public awareness and control campaign against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a potential vector for dangerous diseases.

As part of this program, experts are conducting door-to-door inspections, checking potential water accumulation sites, and reminding residents of the need to eliminate conditions suitable for insect breeding in a timely manner.

Authorities are urging citizens to cooperate with health services and follow preventive guidelines to prevent the further spread of mosquitoes during the summer period.
