Restrictions introduced at a military unit in Cyprus after a case of meningitis

Authorities in Cyprus continue to closely monitor the situation involving a serviceman whose meningitis was confirmed. As stated by Ministry of Defence representative Christos Pieris, the patient, who is being treated at Nicosia General Hospital, remains in stable condition.

According to him, doctors plan to try to disconnect the patient from the mechanical ventilator during the day. After that, he will need a few more days of inpatient treatment outside the intensive care unit. Doctors assess his condition as stable.

Following the confirmed case, temporary preventive measures lasting seven days were introduced at the military unit where the serviceman was serving. The restrictions concern leave, movement and mass gatherings of personnel. The decision was made on the recommendation of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control.

In addition, three other people are under medical observation. One of them was hospitalized the previous evening, however, as the Ministry of Defence emphasized, they do not have symptoms of meningitis, and the monitoring is being carried out purely for preventive reasons.

Authorities also said that a large-scale sanitation treatment of the premises has already been carried out at the military unit. Since the very beginning of the incident, regular disinfection and spraying of special agents have been taking place there.

The Ministry of Defence representative reminded that meningitis can be transmitted through airborne droplets during close contact, so compliance with preventive measures remains a priority. The situation is under constant control of Cyprus’s medical and military services.
