Denktaş criticizes France-Cyprus defense agreement and calls for dialogue with Turkey
Serdar Denktaş, leader of the TAM party, has strongly criticized the defense cooperation between France and the Republic of Cyprus, stating that the strengthening of military presence on the island leads to increased tension and does not contribute to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Speaking on a Turkish television channel, he noted that, in his opinion, South Cyprus is "turning into an arsenal," and such a policy could undermine the prospects for security and stability in the region. Denktaş also questioned the expediency of the military strategy, emphasizing that it distracts from diplomatic efforts.
The politician stated that instead of increasing armaments, the focus should be on dialogue and peaceful coexistence. He stressed the importance of building relationships both with Turkey and between the two communities on the island, calling it the key to long-term peace.
Commenting on the historical context, Denktaş recalled the events of 1974 and Turkey's role as a guarantor country, noting that interpretations of those events remain a subject of political disagreement.
He also warned that attempts at confrontation with Turkey would not lead to positive results, emphasizing that the region needs new diplomatic initiatives rather than military escalation.
In conclusion, Denktaş stated that the people of Cyprus, who have lived through the consequences of conflict, are not interested in repeating the past and expect politicians to take steps aimed at strengthening peace and stability.
