Murat Karalar, President of the Federation of Taxi Driver Associations in the northern part of Cyprus, has sharply criticized Minister of Transport Erhan Arıklı, accusing him of distorting the industry's position and attempting to manipulate public opinion.

According to Karalar, claims that taxi drivers allegedly demanded fines for carrying passengers other than the primary client are untrue. He emphasized that such an initiative did not come from industry representatives but was developed by the ministry itself, then withdrawn due to potential violations of freedom of movement.

The head of the federation also denied reports of a demand for a 70% fare increase. He stated that negotiations discussed an increase of approximately 25%, linked to the rising cost of living, fuel, and operational expenses. Meanwhile, public transport fares were previously increased by 40%, while the taxi sector remained without comparable support.

Karalar reported that during a meeting with authorities, the industry presented 14 demands, most of which fall under the ministry's jurisdiction. These concern market regulation, including issues regarding KIBHAS transport operations, tourist transfers, and vehicles used by casinos.

He stressed that the sector is facing accumulated problems and requires systemic solutions. Otherwise, Karalar warned, taxi drivers are ready to take "serious action."

The federation head also stated that if it is proven the industry indeed made the controversial demands, the leadership is ready to resign. Otherwise, he believes the minister should publicly apologize to industry representatives and the public.
