Record at Girne market: grape leaves reached 800 Lira

A sharp variation in food prices has been recorded at the weekly market in Girne. As shown by monitoring conducted by Gündem Kıbrıs journalists, the most expensive item was grape leaves—their price reached 800 Turkish Liras, setting a unique price record.
At the same time, the most affordable items were lettuce and leeks at 25 Liras each. On average, prices for vegetables and fruits remain more attractive than in supermarkets, which is confirmed by the shoppers themselves.
Among other prices: strawberries and artichokes—around 200 Liras, nectarines—up to 400 Liras, green beans—230 Liras, tomatoes—120 Liras, bananas and melons—around 100 Liras. More moderate prices were recorded for potatoes (30 Liras), oranges (30 Liras), and cucumbers (40 Liras).
A survey of market visitors showed that many prefer to buy products here due to lower prices compared to retail chains. However, the producers themselves note that their costs continue to rise, primarily due to the increasing price of diesel fuel, which directly affects the final cost of products.
Experts note that such a significant price increase for certain categories, such as grape leaves, may be due to seasonal factors and limited supply. At the same time, the overall price level at the market remains relatively balanced, allowing consumers to find more affordable alternatives.
