Dangerous pesticide residues found in grapes, vine leaves and peppers in the TRNC
The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the TRNC published the results of the latest food inspections conducted between May 14 and 22. During laboratory testing, residues of plant protection products exceeding the permissible limits were found in a number of vegetables and fruits.
According to the ministry, 37 of the 38 samples of imported products were found to be safe. A violation was identified in Sultanina grapes imported by SVS Tic. Ltd. The product was found to contain pesticide levels above the permissible limit, after which the entire batch was destroyed.
Inspections of local products also revealed violations. Of the 24 samples, 21 were found to be clean. In Yeşilköy, vine leaves produced by Tuncer Hüroglu were found to contain levels of plant protection products above the recommended limit. In connection with this, the harvest has been temporarily suspended until a repeat laboratory analysis is carried out.
In addition, in Tepebaşı, hot peppers belonging to producer Savaş Ozan, as well as sweet peppers from Tatlısu grown by Cemile Çilu, were found to contain substances not recommended for use by the authorities.
The batch of hot peppers has already been destroyed. The ministry also said that the same measure will be applied to the sweet peppers.
The authorities stressed that food product inspections continue on a regular basis in order to protect consumer health and ensure compliance with regulations on the use of agricultural chemicals.
