Cyprus is aging rapidly: the average age of the population has risen to 41
Cyprus continues to face accelerating population aging. According to new Eurostat data, the median age of the island's residents reached 41 years in January 2025. By comparison, this figure stood at 34.9 years in 2005 and 37 years in 2015. Over the past twenty years, Cyprus's population has thus aged by more than six years.
At the same time, the share of older residents is increasing. In 2025, people over 65 accounted for 13.9% of the country's population, compared with 9.4% in 2005. Meanwhile, the number of children and teenagers continues to decline. The share of children under 15 fell from 19.9% in 2005 to 15.2% in 2025.
A decline is also seen among young people. The 15 to 19 age group now makes up only 4.9% of Cyprus's population, whereas twenty years ago this figure reached 7.8%.
Despite these demographic changes, the share of the working-age population aged 20 to 64 remains relatively stable at 61.7% of the population.
The aging population trend is characteristic of the European Union as a whole. According to Eurostat, at the beginning of 2025 people over 65 already accounted for 22% of the EU population. The increase in the number of residents over 80 is particularly noticeable, with their share reaching 6% of Europe's population.
Among EU countries, the highest average population age was recorded in Italy at 49.1 years. Bulgaria and Portugal follow, both at 47.3 years. The youngest countries remain Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta.
Experts note that population aging places additional pressure on healthcare systems, pension provision and the labor market, while also increasing the need for long-term demographic and migration policy.
