Inflation in Cyprus accelerates: fuel and food prices rise the most

An acceleration of inflation has been recorded in Cyprus amidst the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East. According to the Consumer Protection Service and the Statistical Service, annual inflation in April 2026 reached 2.8%, compared to 1.2% in March and 0.1% in February.
The most notable price increase occurred in the petroleum products category — jumping by 18.3% compared to April last year and by 12.6% compared to March. Agricultural products (+9.6%) and services (+3.5%) also became more expensive. Meanwhile, the cost of electricity and water decreased by 8%.
Food inflation stood at 4.8%. Among the goods that became more expensive over the month were seafood, washing powders, sugar, baby food, gas cylinders, and toilet paper.
At the same time, some categories showed a decrease in prices. The most noticeable price drops were for cheeses, fresh vegetables, condensed milk, frozen fish, sausages, and beverages.
The Consumer Protection Service also published data from the "e-kalathi" platform, which compares the cost of identical goods in the country's largest supermarkets. The difference between the most expensive and cheapest stores for a basket of 257 goods was nearly 120 euros.
The most expensive supermarket turned out to be "Philippos", while the cheapest was "Athienitis". The authorities are urging residents to use the platform and mobile application more actively to find better prices.
Experts note that rising energy prices continue to put pressure on the market, despite some slowing in the overall rate of price increases.
