The European Union has temporarily suspended customs duties on nitrogen fertilisers for one year. The decision was taken during an informal Eurogroup meeting held in Nicosia.

The measure is aimed at reducing costs for European farmers and fertiliser producers. According to the European Commission, it will save around €60 million in import duties and improve access to more stable supplies.

It is also noted that the decision fits into the EU’s strategy to reduce dependence on Russia and Belarus in the fertiliser sector and to develop more diversified supply chains on the global market.

Cyprus Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said the initiative would provide Europe’s agricultural sector with more affordable and reliable resources. According to him, it would also have a positive effect on end consumers by stabilising prices.

He noted that the suspension of tariffs will apply only to goods that are not already covered by existing preferences and duty-free regimes. In addition, quotas have been introduced based on 2024 import volumes with an additional upward adjustment.

It is separately clarified that the measure does not apply to products from Russia and Belarus due to the current geopolitical situation and the war in Ukraine.

The tariff suspension will enter into force after its official publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
