UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) intervened promptly to prevent an escalation of the situation in the buffer zone near Avlona. The incident occurred on Tuesday and involved the movement of Turkish Cypriot security personnel.

According to UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique, the tension was sparked by the agricultural activities of a Greek Cypriot near the northern ceasefire line. This led to a mobilization of the Turkish Cypriot side in the sensitive area.

He stated that peacekeepers quickly established contact with all parties involved, preventing further escalation. "Security personnel left the area, and the situation was resolved peacefully," Siddique noted.

The UN emphasized that maintaining the status quo in the buffer zone remains a key task of the mission. Following the incident, surveillance in the area has been increased.

The buffer zone in Cyprus is traditionally considered one of the island's most sensitive territories, where even local episodes can lead to increased tension. In this regard, the peacekeepers' actions are aimed at preventing any provocations and maintaining stability.

The UN will continue to monitor the situation and engage with both sides to prevent similar incidents in the future.
