Israel intercepts Global Sumud flotilla in eastern Mediterranean: vessel was near Cyprus

The Israeli Navy has launched an operation to intercept the Global Sumud flotilla, which was heading toward the Gaza Strip on a humanitarian mission aiming to challenge the maritime blockade of the region.

According to participants, Israeli warships were spotted in the international waters of the eastern Mediterranean, followed by the boarding of one of the vessels by marines. Released video footage shows special forces taking control of a flotilla vessel.

It is noted that the route passed through waters to the south and southwest of Cyprus, but no official reports regarding the involvement of the Republic of Cyprus in the operation have been received. Cyprus did not participate in the interception, did not take action to detain or escort the vessels, and did not report providing logistical support to the parties of the conflict.

Before launching the operation, the Israeli side warned the flotilla participants, calling on them to alter their course and turn back. Organizers of the Global Flotilla stated that two warships were spotted near their vessels, and communication with one of the ships was lost after the pursuit began.

Israel has previously referred to such missions as 'media stunts', claiming that the organizers refuse to deliver humanitarian cargo through official channels for subsequent delivery to Gaza.

The operation is taking place amid Israel's ongoing control over maritime supplies to the Gaza Strip and the enforcement of the current blockade of the region.
