Cyprus issue losing its place on the agenda: important topic disappeared from the election campaign
A new trend has been recorded in Cyprus: despite the growing significance of the Cyprus issue for citizens, it has practically disappeared from the election agenda.
According to studies conducted in April 2026, the problem of the island's settlement has, for the first time in many years, taken second or third place among the most important topics for voters. However, it is hardly discussed during the current campaign.
Even when the topic is raised, the discussion quickly shifts to other issues — mainly the current agenda actively promoted by the media and social networks. As a result, election debates are focused on a limited number of topics that parties consider more advantageous from an electoral point of view.
Experts note that such an approach pushes strategically important issues into the background. In addition to the Cyprus settlement, undervalued topics include defense, the country's international standing, its role as an EU member, and relations with the Turkish Cypriot community.
Analysts warn: ignoring long-term challenges in favor of a short-term agenda may affect the quality of political decisions in the future. Despite high public interest, the key issues determining the island's future remain outside of full discussion.
