Cyprus Issues Commemorative Silver Coin "Castles of Rigaina"
The Central Bank of Cyprus has announced the release of a €5 collector silver coin titled "Castles of Rigaina." The coin is dedicated to the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
The coin's design is inspired by the legend of the Castles of Rigaina—a popular Cypriot myth. The reverse depicts Rigaina watching over her castles, alongside the official logo of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, symbolizing the Cypriot sun—a sign of light, energy, and hope for a shared European future.
The coin was designed by artist George Stamatopoulos and minted at the Bank of Greece.
The mintage is limited to 2,000 copies, with each coin sold in a protective case. The price is €65 (including VAT).
The obverse features the emblem of the Central Bank of Cyprus and the inscriptions "Cyprus" in Greek, Turkish, and English, as well as the minting year 2026.
The coin has a diameter of 38.61 mm, weighs 28.28 g, and is made of an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
Sales will take place in two stages.
- The first phase is from March 16 to April 8, 2026, for dealers, collectors, and the general public.
- Sales for private buyers will begin on March 30 through the Central Bank counters and online system.
Each buyer can purchase no more than two coins. If copies remain after the first stage, the second phase of sales will begin on April 15, during which up to four coins can be purchased per day.
