Night chase with shooting near Nicosia: two people detained
A police chase involving gunfire occurred in Cyprus overnight, resulting in the detention of a 37-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman.
According to the police, information was received around 03:50 about a vehicle moving from the occupied areas through the buffer zone toward the free territories near Lympia. When the police attempted to stop the car for inspection, the driver accelerated and tried to escape.
The chase continued through the areas of Idalio, Pera Chorio, and Latsia. During the pursuit, the driver maneuvered dangerously and collided with police vehicles twice. To stop the car, police officers opened fire from their service weapons.
Eventually, on a section of the Nicosia-Limassol highway, the driver lost control, the car crashed into a barrier and stopped.
The suspects were detained. A preliminary drug test on the driver showed a positive result. According to preliminary data, duty-free tobacco products may have been transported in the car.
Both detainees were taken to the Nicosia General Hospital, after which they were placed in custody. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department is continuing the investigation.
