Iconic 'Thalassaki' Cafe in Limassol Closes After 20 Years

One of Limassol's most famous coastal spots, Thalassaki cafe on the Akti Olympion seafront, has ceased operations after 20 years.
Opening in 2005 following the redevelopment of the coastal area, it was the first cafe on this stretch. Its prime seaside location and affordable prices made it a favorite among locals, including winter swimmers.
Monday marked the cafe's final day of business. The managers have already vacated the premises and are preparing to hand it over to the municipality.
The property is owned by Limassol Municipality, which regained possession after a lengthy legal battle.
The municipality plans to evaluate the site and announce a new management tender soon. Reportedly, the tender terms may include price caps on essential items like coffee and water.
City hall expects the new rent to be significantly higher, providing more revenue for the city.
The municipality and the previous manager had been in litigation for several years over usage rights and financial obligations.
The court ruled in favor of Limassol Municipality, ordering the manager to vacate. The court of first instance also awarded compensation for lost rental income, a decision expected to be appealed in the Supreme Court.
