Two arrested in Strovolos, Cyprus following seizure of 62 kg of cocaine and 167 kg of cannabis
Two men, aged 34 and 26, have been detained in connection with the discovery of a large shipment of drugs and weapons in Strovolos, Nicosia district, Cyprus. The Nicosia District Court has ordered their remand in custody for eight days.
According to the investigation, a vehicle search revealed five boxes containing 287 packs of 40 units each — a total of 11,480 firecrackers. During a personal search of one of the suspects, 27g of cannabis, 9g of cocaine, precision scales, two A4 sheets with potential drug traces, and €230 were seized. The second individual was detained for illegal possession of explosives.
Searches of premises linked to one of the suspects yielded, among other items, 62 kg of cocaine, 167 kg of cannabis, 14 kg of cannabis resin, a pistol, a revolver, a replica pistol, 381 THC-infused electronic cigarettes, €12,765 in cash, and two improvised bombs. The suspects and evidence have been transferred to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) offices in Nicosia.
The investigation is in its initial phase: plans include interviewing 22 witnesses from the suspects' inner circle, reviewing CCTV footage, and analyzing telephone and bank records. The court noted the risk of witness tampering and potential flight abroad, hence the eight-day remand. Due to health concerns, one of the detainees will be sent to the Nicosia General Hospital for examination.
