Cyprus discussed support for Ukraine and Middle East security at EU defense ministers meeting

Cyprus Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas participated in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting in its defense ministers configuration, which took place on May 12 in Brussels.
One of the key topics of the meeting was the continued support for Ukraine from the EU. The ministers discussed strengthening the Ukrainian defense industry, expanding security cooperation between the European Union and Kyiv, and continuing financial assistance through mechanisms such as the European Peace Facility and the SAFE program.
The meeting was attended via video link by Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Special attention was given to the situation in the Middle East and its impact on European security. Discussions focused on maritime security, including ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the results of Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Another important topic was the strengthening of the European Union's defense readiness. The ministers discussed the development of the European defense industry, the expansion of the single defense market, and the revision of public procurement rules in the defense sector.
Prior to the Council meeting, a meeting of the Steering Board of the European Defence Agency at the level of defense ministers was held. During the discussion, measures to strengthen the agency's role and increase its efficiency were considered.
In his speech, Vassilis Palmas confirmed Cyprus's support for the further strengthening of the European Defence Agency and emphasized the importance of joint European security initiatives against the backdrop of growing international challenges.
