Two Cypriots Elected to the UK Parliament

The opposition Labour Party has won the UK parliamentary elections, marking a historic moment with the election of a Turkish Cypriot woman to the House of Commons for the first time.

According to preliminary vote counts, the Labour Party secured 326 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, thus obtaining the necessary majority to form a government.

The ruling Conservative Party, which has been in power since 2010, is projected to hold only 73 seats. This defeat is the largest in the history of the Conservatives.

Current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already conceded defeat and congratulated Labour leader Keir Starmer on his election victory. Starmer will become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

As a result of the general elections, a Turkish Cypriot woman has been elected to the UK Parliament for the first time. She is 35-year-old Nesil Çalışkan, who was nominated by the Labour Party in Barking, east of London.

Additionally, Greek Cypriot Bambos Charalambous retained his seat in Parliament, having first been elected in 2017. In the recent elections, he garnered a total of 23,337 votes.
