The UK will deploy the destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East to participate in an international mission to ensure maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. This was announced by the British Ministry of Defence, which stressed that the deployment is defensive in nature.

According to the department, the ship will be on standby to participate in a multinational coalition jointly coordinated by the UK and France. The mission's main task will be to protect commercial vessels and restore confidence in one of the world's most important shipping routes.

The ministry noted that the decision to deploy HMS Dragon was made as part of a pre-prepared plan to respond to threats in the region. Specific actions will depend on further developments in the Middle East.

Special attention in the statement was given to Cyprus. Earlier in March, HMS Dragon was already deployed to protect British airbases on the island following a drone attack on the Akrotiri base. Despite the ship's redeployment to the Strait of Hormuz area, London assured that Cyprus would remain «well protected» as the UK's defensive capabilities on the island have been strengthened since January.

The UK and France continue to coordinate international efforts to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing tensions in the region.
