From Sports Arenas to Parliament: Two Former Athletes Join the New Composition of the Cyprus House of Representatives
Two MPs well known in the island’s sporting circles have appeared in the new composition of the Cyprus parliament. They are Michalis Kounounis, elected for DISY in Limassol, and Panikos Xiourouppas, representing AKEL in Larnaca.
Both politicians previously built careers in professional sport: Kounounis in basketball, Xiourouppas — in football. Their move into politics is seen as a continuation of public activity based on discipline, teamwork and a competitive spirit.
In political circles, it is noted that such experience may become an advantage in parliamentary work, where resilience, the ability to work in a team and the drive to achieve results are important.
Kounounis and Xiourouppas have become part of the new convocation, in which the presence of new faces from different areas of public life has noticeably increased. Their appearance reflects a trend of bringing into politics people with experience outside traditional party structures.
Now the former athletes will have to trade sports arenas for parliamentary sessions and bring a competitive mindset into the sphere of lawmaking, where the key field of struggle becomes the public interest and political decisions.
