Salaries of Cyprus’s New Parliament Members Revealed
After the parliamentary elections in Cyprus were completed, the issue of the income of MPs and the leadership of the House of Representatives once again came into the public spotlight. According to data from the Accountant General’s Office, monthly payments to parliamentarians increase significantly due to various allowances and compensations.
The Speaker of Parliament receives a basic monthly salary before tax of 8,715 euros. With additional payments included, the total amount reaches 11,456 euros per month. After taxes and pension contributions, net income is about 7,461 euros.
For ordinary MPs, the basic salary before tax is 7,911 euros per month. After mandatory deductions and pension contributions, the net monthly income reaches approximately 5,466 euros.
According to the published data, an MP’s annual gross income without allowances is 56,310 euros. However, after adding all payments and calculating based on 13 salaries, the total amount rises to almost 100,000 euros — 99,612 euros per year.
The structure of additional payments includes an allowance for attending sittings — 20,503 euros per year, an indexation compensation — 5,804 euros, as well as a secretary allowance — 12,302 euros. In addition, compensation for travel expenses of 7,791 euros per year is provided.
After all tax deductions, an MP’s net annual income amounts to about 68,684 euros.
Against the backdrop of the formation of the new parliamentary composition, the issue of MPs’ salaries is once again actively being discussed in society, especially given the rising cost of living and the economic difficulties faced by the island’s residents.
According to the constitutional procedure, payments to outgoing MPs cease after the new parliament is sworn in, after which salary payments to newly elected parliamentarians begin.
