A strong smell of liquefied gas was detected in the Germasogeia area of Limassol on Monday, spreading across a wide area and causing concern among local residents. Emergency services immediately joined the investigation into the incident.

According to Germasogeia deputy mayor Christos Papamichael, the smell has been particularly strong since noon and covers a broad area — from Christotaki Kranou Street and nearby neighborhoods to the coastal zone.

He said the fire service is already carrying out extensive checks to determine the source of the smell. Vehicles and various premises have been inspected, but the likelihood of a gas leak is currently assessed as low.

Among the scenarios being considered is a possible source of the smell from one of the ships in the nearby waters. In this connection, the Cyprus Ports Authority has been informed about the situation.

«The relevant services are already working and carrying out checks and inspections to identify the source of the problem. We ask the public to remain calm and await official information», Papamichael said in his statement.

At this stage, no information has been received about any threat to public health or the need for evacuation. The investigation continues.
