Cyprus Police Warns of New Video Call Scam
The Cyprus Police have called on citizens to remain extra vigilant after another telephone fraud case in which a 52-year-old Nicosia resident lost a significant amount of money.
According to the investigation by the Nicosia Police Department (TAE), the man received a video call through a social app from an unknown person who introduced himself as a Cyprus Police officer and claimed there was a supposedly necessary procedure involving the Migration Department.
During the conversation, the fraudster displayed a fake police ID and managed to persuade the victim to provide personal data, as well as information about bank accounts. After that, funds were stolen from the man's accounts.
The police stress that such methods are becoming increasingly common and pose a serious threat to citizens. The department particularly noted that police officers or government services never request personal data, passwords, or banking information by phone or through video calls in messaging apps.
In connection with the incident, law enforcement authorities strongly recommend not trusting unknown calls, not sharing confidential data, and immediately ending suspicious conversations.
In addition, citizens are advised to contact their bank immediately at the slightest sign of fraud to block transactions and report the incident to the police in order to prevent further losses and assist in the investigation.
